From the CDS Head of School: Supporting Each Other Through Crisis: Important Updates and Next Steps
Dear CDS Families, As we endure and overcome this unprecedented crisis in our region, I am thinking of you all. Now more than ever we know how crucial connection, compassion, and community support are. This week it is important everyone in our community put their physical, mental, and emotional well being first. We know that the catastrophic storm and floods have impacted many of our community members in ways we never would have imagined. As everyone gets their bearings, it is vital we check-in, support and uplift one another as we collectively work our way to recovery, repair, and rebuilding. I know this is a dark moment, and I also know together we will overcome it and move forward. I am working closely with our leadership team to ensure we provide updates and resources to our faculty, staff, parents, and students. We have accounted for all CDS employees and confirmed they are safe. Unfortunately, we do have employees that have been displaced and soon we will share information on how we can support these folks and other employees who need our support. I am also working with Biltmore Forest and the County on both campus repair and what CDS can do for the extended community. We are anxious to gather information about our CDS families and your unique situations so that we can better support you. If you are able and are comfortable sharing, please take a minute to complete this survey to help us keep track of our community and what you are encountering. Link: https://bit.ly/47M4BNT As of now, school will be closed through Fall Break (October 14th). Initial inspection found CDS campus has some minor damage and tree removal needed, but overall our facilities and grounds fared well considering. Our hope is that late this week and next week we can begin the process of campus recovery. We will reopen, and as quickly as possible. The main issue preventing us from reopening is the lack of water and power service, and we are monitoring utility progress closely. We know many of you left Asheville to stay with family or friends, and we want to provide enough advance notice about our reopening projections to give you plenty of time to get back and return to school. Therefore, we are beginning a rolling process of evaluating school opening readiness and you can expect an update by the end of the day Wednesday, October 9th regarding our ability to reopen on October 15th. In the meantime, we will be focusing on supporting not only our CDS community members in need, but also our greater Asheville community members in need of support. More information on how you can help will be shared soon. Thinking of all of you and wishing you positivity as we overcome this challenge. With deep gratitude, Brett Brett Fuhrman Head of School Carolina Day School
