PowerSchool Cyber Security Incident
|
|
January 9, 2025 Dear Parents/Guardians, The Fox Chapel Area School District was notified by PowerSchool LLC, the company that provides the district's student information system, that it experienced a cybersecurity incident that has affected schools internationally. According to PowerSchool, on December 28, 2024, they discovered that actors using a compromised credential entered the company's customer support portal, which allowed further access to its school information system. PowerSchool LLC notified the district that some of the district's data was accessed in this incident. PowerSchool indicated that the incident is contained and is over. PowerSchool, assisted by cybersecurity forensics experts and law enforcement agencies, is continuing to investigate the type of information that was accessed in order to identify the individuals who were affected. PowerSchool will be sharing more specific information about their incident, including if Personally Identifiable Information (PII) was accessed, after it completes its investigation with third-party experts and law enforcement. Either PowerSchool or the district will contact you with additional information when it becomes available. If the district learns about any necessary next steps, it will pass the information along promptly. The Fox Chapel Area School District is extremely disappointed that PowerSchool experienced this unfortunate incident. Although this happened within the PowerSchool infrastructure, the district is reviewing its own records independently and will continue to take privacy and data security very seriously. Sincerely, Dr. Mary Catherine Reljac Superintendent | |
